iceberg - thank you for your advice! I just applied for egg money and got an instant acceptance online with a £2000 credit limit so you've been a great help to me. And yes, I did get the 6.9% rate, which I think was due largely to the fact that I followed your advice and selected the "I want to prepay my spending to the card" option!

And you're right - there must be a better way to transfer the money than Western Union... It would probably be cheaper to fly to the country to hand over the money!
