I had a buffalo one for years and it was good as I could back up and then delete things making more room on my computer...
I needed a new one and I was recommended to buy this....
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Passport-Essential-Portable/dp/B0012IOHVM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1249146434&sr=8-1
So i bought it but my hubby tells me that I can't delete anything on my computer as the drive will delete it on there too....
So what do I get, another buffalo one?
Thanks in advance...

Unless you are using syncing software, deleting on one drive has no effect on the other. Have you considered the consequences of a drive failing?!!

Nonsense, it's nothing to do with the HD, your hubby has got it totally wrong, especially if you are only using a standard backup program, or even simpler, just copying from your main computer HD to the external drive.
Copy to the external drive and delete from your main C drive, and it'll still be on the external drive.0 -

Great make and a great price. Go for it.0 -
Sticking with Western Digital, I'd personally go for this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Elements-External-Drive/dp/B001GO9ERE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1249156636&sr=1-1
For an extra £25 you get 4 times the storage capacity, much better if future requirements change.0 -
I'd agree......penny or so dearer in PC world & had mine a few weeks now seems like a good drive so far

I bought the one i posted the link for back in January, it's just my husband was saying that if i deleted anything off my laptop the hard drive would think it needs to be deleted off there as well....
I am not sure how i would go about backing things up without using the synching software that comes with the drive...0 -
After you have disabled the autosynch feature, just go to My Computer (Windows) and open up a folder on the external drive, then drag and drop files from your computer to your external drive. This will make a copy on the drive and won't delete anything from your computer. If you intentionally delete stuff from your computer they won't be deleted off the external drive unless you actively go in an delete them from the drive.

If the external hard drive is just for backups i would recommend Clickfree - amazon, ebay, QVC..... plug and play and your work is safe. Not cheap, but def worth the extra for ease of use. I love it and its so easy I will back up regularly now.0
