    prices in newcastle have trebled in the last 5 years.

    80k house in 2000 no selling for 240+ even after the recent drop of 20-30k

    And wages have done...what in that time?

    Or has the area been flooded with all of these non jobs in the public sector?

    just because you've got a job don't mean everyone else has. A lot more people these days have built businesses and have done well out of it.
