Slice them on the diagonal, very finely, and they can be used in recipes in the same way as french beans, etc. If they're old ones, with big beans inside, just take those out (if you don't like them) and just eat the pod.
I personally like them steamed with butter as a side vegetable, but when we get a glut use them as a mix of vegetables in vegetable curries, chillies, casseroles, plus sometimes I make cheese sauce to go over steamed cauliflower and green veg (so the runner beans, finely sliced, could be one of those). If you want to do something special as part of a buffet - you could use them in a Salade Nicoise :cool: instead of french beans (if you can find low-cost tins of tuna).
If you REALLY can't face them, I would give them away (or add them to your own compost heap).

I love runner beans! You could easily incorporate them into a salad for your entertaining - but you might just fine another friend who'd really like them!Resolution:

We had some that my sibling left here as they were left on their work desk and they don't eat beans .... I ended up putting them in the bin because we don't eat those beans either (they were the bigger ones with skins that looked like rhino skins).

theres a lovely italian frittata that used grated potatoe - eggs - thinly sliced runner beans and any strong hard cheese - bake it in a cake tin and serve sliced into wedges @ room temperature
really nice party food
its particularly nice with a breadcrumb crust ( butter the tin and chuck in breadcrumbs before adding the frittata mixture they brown during cooking)Fight Back - Be Happy0 -
Great suggestions! was planning a fritatta for the party so they can go in there and I'll freeze the rest for curries etc0

I was going to suggest putting them in a curry or in a spicy tomato sauce to go with pasta - if you chop them into fairly small pieces they cook down and aren't readily identifiable. (I'm not keen on runner beans either - I don't like furry food
- so I've had to find ways of dealing with the ones I get in my veg box occasionally.
)

The advantage with growing your own is you can eat beans at the point where they are tastiest ie young- so we eat runners when small like french beans-pod and all. Same with broadies. Then let some get bigger to enjoy later.
To be honest most of our beans end up in pasta sauces/stews/soups etc so you just get a bit of crunch in the sauce not really the flavour of the beans.
Either podded or chopped small in the pods they go great in ministrone.
Definately pod if they are bigger-the beans are a bit like butter beans in taste so if you don't like the pods try the beans instead-most europeans grow them big and eat the beans and think we are odd eating the pods lol.
You could be really MSE pod the beans to use in soups/chillis/stews etc-not raw because of the toxins as in kidney beans, then thinnly slice the pods to use in their own right.
Shame to waste, I love the fact anything we have leftovers can go to the chooks to make us lovely eggs lol.

Have a look at Delia's spiced runner bean chutney but as above, if they are big, old & "case hardened" then just bin them, no one likes eating beans with hard, chewy skins, no matter how they are cookedNumerus non sum0

A friend has given me a big bag of runner beans from her garden. I have to admit to being totally clueless as to what to do with them - do i eat the pod or the shuck and eat the beans? Any other suggestions about what to do with them?
I like the idea about about finely slicing, steaming and serve with butter - again, is that pod or bean or both?
Is there anything I can do with them for a salad style dinner? I have friends coming tomorrow and we're having 'cold tea' cheeses, ham, bread, pickles, coleslaw, salad leaves type stuff.
