Debit Card payment not gone through - can it be claimed?

About a month ago I paid for something using my VISA debit card but for some reason the payment hasn't shown up on my bank statement.
Then the next day I got a refund for it and that does show up on the statement so I am £90 up it seems.
Is it possible the original transaction could still go through? Do I have any legal obiligation to pay the money from the refund back?
(morally I would if I am asked to by the organisation but I am not sure if I want to go out of my way to contact them about it)

So you took the item back and got the money back although it wasn't paid for in the first place?
But yes they can still take the payment I would imagine.0 -

Debit card purchases can be almost immediately, a few days later, a week later, even up to 6 years later. It's just that you're used to them being taken quickly.
The refund could even be re-called by the company through the two banks.
Don't allow yourself to get into a position where you don't have enough money in the account to cover a reverse of the refund and the original charge going through. If you do It could cost you more than you bargained for if it takes you into the red.
Down to your concience now !0 -
it wasn't an item - it was a course which was canceled and as far as I was concerned it was paid for when I got a refund- just the payment doesn't seem to have gone throughSo you took the item back and got the money back although it wasn't paid for in the first place?

Thanks. Guess I will mention it to the place at some point as don't want it hanging over me - (though they do have my contact details so I kind of feel they should notice). Or should I ask my bank about it?
Also surely there must be some kind of deadline for debit card purchases to be processed ? As it is hardly fair if someone doesn't notice something hasn't gone through and suddenly 5 years down the line goes overdrawn because of it?0 -
Debit card transactions can be debited from your account anytime upto 6 months.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0

so maybe I shouldn't pay the money back to company as it may still be claimed from my bank at some point down the line?0

You're going to have to remember to always keep a £90 buffer in your account in order to avoid overdraft fees and/or interest when they do reverse the transaction.orangeslimes wrote: »so maybe I shouldn't pay the money back to company as it may still be claimed from my bank at some point down the line?
I'm not sure I'd want to have to remember that for (up to) 6 months/years (whichever it is).
I think I'd definitely be going "out of my way to contact them about it".0
