Importing from the US

I'm thinking of buying a set of Ford Mustang alloy wheels and tyres from a private seller on Ebay. The cost of the wheels is £239.24 and the shipping cost is a staggering £813.42. I can't get these wheel here so am still temped but I'm concerned about what customs will charge me when they get here.

Can anyone make sense of the customs charges for this ? I'd imagine that even sent as gifts I'd be liable for charges on the wheels and the shipping costs ? Is the customs duty 3.5% and is that just the wheels or the wheels and shipping ? Same goes for the VAT ?

I know Parcel Force will then also hit me with a "handling charge" but does anyone kow what it would be for priority mail ?

Yes its on the whole amount you pay the charge (£1052.66) , + import tax lets say its 5% (you need to look up the rate for wheels) + £52.63 = £1105.29 , then vat on top of that total (15%)= £165.79 , total will be £1271.08 + handling charge
  • Ok, thanks for that. Would you know where I can look up the rate for wheels ?

You can get the info from HMRC, not sure if it will be on their website.
Just as a thought about shipping, do you know how heavy they are?
I reckon someone could fly to the US and bring them back as luggage for almost half that price, still have to pay duty but must be worth considering, especially if they're near a regular US/UK flight area (Chicago, California, New York, etc)
    .
  • Heavy I'd think. The rims without tyres are 31lbs each. Good idea though

Which Mustang've you got? One of the newer ones, or a "proper" Mustang (ie a late 60s GT350, Fastback etc..)? :D

Never used them - just know the name cos they used to be up the road from us.

  • Yes, I emailed them about these wheels but didn't get any reply

Unfortunateley it's HMRC who apply the duty and they charge it on value of item plus postage cost
