Ideas for accessorising a red mac

I've just bought a gorgeous red mac from Warehouse and I'm looking for a good quality scarf and a necklace to go with it.

Here's the mac:

The scarf will have to look expensive (silk?), perhaps with a bold red/black pattern.

To give me some more choice, I'd like to buy a long bold black necklace as well. I've seen some nice ones at Wallis and Principles, but they don't look expensive enough for the mac.

Any ideas where I can buy suitable accessories please???

That's a gorgeous coat! How about Accesorize (sp)? There's a sale on at the moment too!

I'll try Accessorize; I like their jewellery and accessories.

Yes, the mac is gorgeous - I've been looking for 'the perfect one' for over a year and I'm really glad I've found it! :T

I don't think a long necklace would work with the mac, unless you're planning to leave it open (which would look lovely)? I say that because with the buttons and tie belt, there's quite a lot of detail on the front and adding a necklace to that might look cluttered.

As for a scarf, I wouldn't accessorise red with more red... what about a clashing green? A light cotton scarf would look good, or if you want something more luxurious, a pashmina wrapped round. Even a short silk neck-tie that you could tie at the side. Or if you don't want to clash, cream always makes red look very classic and expensive.

Beautiful Mac! I agree, cream is lovely, and red would be lost as far as scarfs go. Black with smaller red patter might work well. I'd be looking for a super hat too.

I would also go for a rich cream I think - the red is such a statement colour, that you don't want to overdo it. I have a fairly similar red mac, and if I wear a scarf it's generally cream. Looks fab with some nice, smart, dark jeans, funky red heels and maybe some cool earrings.

I wear a leopard print scarf with my red mac, and get lots of compliments from the fashion conscious girls I work with!

I like cream, but it doesn't look nice on me at all.

I hadn't thought about a super hat - that's a great idea as well! Any styles or shops you would recommend? I've never had a hat, so, I'm a bit lost.

Many thanks to all the girls who replied. Please keep those ideas coming!

Wht about a fedora? I hve one I wear with a vintage burberry. :) Alternatively, berets are fabulous (and can be picked up very cheaply, so a good way to mix it up). I'd keep it quite classic with the coat. (I just love that coat!)

What kind of colouring do you have? That might impact, (although I find things that shouldn't work well often really do.;))

I quite like red and grey ATM, but it can be draining. Red and orange is bold and autumnal, look gorgeous on a rich brunette or redhead. If you are very bold, red with a rich regal purple would be a bold statement. Unless you are quite bold though, the coats elegance might be ''compromised'' by such bold choices.

Red and camel is very, very smart: can't think of colouring it wouldn't work with. If you want elegant and are worried about cream this might be a viable alternative. In a very MSE way, camel also works with a lot of other things and is pretty timeless.
  • I'd look for something with a bird print.

    M&S have introduced a black/red swallow print this AW09.
