wireless problems

can anyone help, i have recently bought a speedtouch 576 wireless router, belkin pcmi card for the laptop & belkin usb adaptor for the desktop. i have placed the router next to the desktop downstairs but the laptop upstairs has very poor signal yet it is only 20 feet away from the router. is there anything i can do to improve the signal? at the moment i am having to unplug the router & move it upstairs when i want to go online on the laptop, this defeat the point of wireless because the signal is then bad on the desktop.

wish i had stuck to a wired system .... i never had problems then!

If your property is of standard construction, you should have no problems with it working upstairs. It should easily work over 20 meters not just 20 feet! It sounds like your signal is getting interference from another device. Do you have a cordless phone or video sender? It could also be a neighbours device causing your problem. Have you tried changing the wireless channel on the router. I don't know what the default channels is on a 576 but if it is set to 6, try changing it to 1 or 11 and see if that makes any difference.
