Scottish Power tried to con me when switching!

Read the thread properly and then you might get all the facts right.littletommytucker wrote: »This is what is known in the energy industry as a "dispute". You contacted Scottish Power, they agreed the reading was wrong, and started a "disputed reads process". Meaning they have sent off the relevant data to the National Grid and in turn your new supplier who will now both amend the meter reading. To clarify the matter further, this meter reading was provided by E.On, as it is always the company you change to that submit the change over reading to National Grid, so the incompetence of your new company meant they were losing out on £115.... which is a drop in the ocean to all parties involved. And Scottish Power most definitely don’t have some sad old man sat at a pc fiddling meter readings thinking "he he, I conned tartanterra out of £115, I hope she doesn’t notice".
Scottish Power admitted it was their mistake. E.ON are actually blameless.
Whichever way you look at it, I was £115 down, and I assure you, as an "interested party" £115 is not "a drop in the ocean" to me. That is why I posted it on a moneysaving site - to warn others to check their final bills.
If it happened to me, it could happen to someone else.
I was trying to help others, and that is what MSE is supposed to be all about, but I obviously didn't expect you, as Scottish Power's number one fan, to be making smart a**e comments.Nothing is foolproof, as fools are so ingenious!

What we are trying to say is whatever your account has closed on with Scottish Power is what the account will open with Eon, if your final reading with Scottish Power is 14500 your opening reading with Eon is also going to be 14500. You weren't being conned and Scottish Power were only billing you to what Eon told them to.tartanterra wrote: »Read the thread properly and then you might get all the facts right.

Hi Tartenterra
I can confirm Vestra is spot on, the opening and closing readings should match and the gaining supplier should be the one to provide the change of supply reading to all parties involved.
Although this is the normal process, I have seen cases where the readings don’t match.
The important thing to do is check the readings with both companies, if both companies have used the ‘incorrect’ COS (change of supply) readings, you in effect will just pay one company more and the other less.
If the readings differ, then a dispute needs raising to correct things and ensure the readings match, that way all energy is paid for to one company or the other.
Using Vestras example if E.ON have billed from 14500 (start read) but the closing read on the Scottish Power bill is 15000 then the reads need changing as you will be overpaying.
Have you checked the E.ON final bill to ensure the right readings have been used?

Final reading given to E.ON was 3760.
Opening gas reading on E.ON supply confirmation 3760.
Closing reading from Scottish Power 3870.
This was an estimate,..... £115 for six days gas.
They started the bill on 3760C, and ended it six days later on 3870E.
If they were given the final reading by E.ON, why did they decide to close my bill on an estimate and not a reading?
And really importantly, why, when my bill shows that I used 12kWh for the corresponding six day period last year, did they choose to bill me for 110kWh for the same six days this year?
That can't be right in anyones book.Nothing is foolproof, as fools are so ingenious!

I chose E.ON over British Gas when leaving Scottish Power, as they had a higher customer service rating.Hi Tartenterra

Are you now saying, that E.ON (as my new supplier) has given Scottish Power the wrong reading?
On my "IT'S ALL DONE" "THIS CONFIRMS ALL THE DETAILS OF YOUR SWITCH" "WELCOME TO E.ON" leaflet that your company sent me, you confirm my starting reading as 3760.
That was my final reading.
Scottish Power have, however, closed my bill on 3870E.
If you wonder why I'm hacked off, that's an estimate almost 10 times greater than my normal usage over the corresponding dates last year. I am dumbfounded about how exactly they came up with this figure. It's outrageous.
I generally work a sixty hour week, and frankly, really don't need all this grief. However, if a simple switch can go this wrong, then others should be warned.
As a representative of my new supplier, if you need to see both the E.ON starting confirmation reading and the final Scottish Power bill, then PM me an e-mail address, and I will scan them and forward them both to you.
It would be useful if both E.ON and Scottish Power could sort this out amongst themselves, rather than the customer having to sort it out.Nothing is foolproof, as fools are so ingenious!

Hi Tartenterra,
I’m not saying E.ON provided the wrong reading, however I think it’s important to check that the E.ON reading has stayed the same and not been changed to match the SP reading.
It does sound like the SP reading is the one that’s incorrect, but I just want to cover all the bases. Better safe than sorry and all that.
All meter readings are sent electronically, as you may know we would obtain the reading first (as an opening read) before sending it to a third party for validation, it is then transmitted to the losing supplier.
One reason for this issue may be that the reading is still with the third party being validated and SP are yet to receive this, hence them estimating the bill.
Even you providing the reading personally to SP doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll use it, as it won’t have been a validated reading by an independent third party.
SP will be able to update to the correct reading and correct the bill.
Unfortunately I’m unable to exchange account details with you by PM as it is against forum rules.
If I can help with any other questions please feel free to ask.
