dab radio

whats the best radio/hifi set up to get and from where?

Comments

  • Depends on what you need.

    There are three main choices

Personal Stereo - To listen to on the move with Headphones

Standalone Radio - With built in speaker etc.

Seperate - To add to an existing Hi-Fi setup.

State which one you need and what you're looking for (mainly for sound quality, looks or price?) and if possible give a max budget.

There is another choice - a DAB radio card for the computer. When I bought mine, I think in the early months of 2004, it was by far the cheapest option at about £50 from PC World.

It works well, but you have to fit the card in - it's an internal PCI card, and I guess it's not as convenient as having a freestanding radio. However, you can certainly hook it up to a stereo system.

As a first system to listen to Classic FM in the dining room at mealtimes ( how civilised ! ) I went with the What HiFi 2004 Award Winning Best System under £150

Its the Goodmans 1104 DAB. bought mine from Richer Sounds at £80 when the rrp was £100. Saw that Dixons have them in the sale at the moment at the same price.

For the money it really is a great buy, followed the magazines advice and burnt it in (left it on at full for a day whilst I was at work) to break the speakers in. It also includes a glass stand.

Whilst it says Goodmans on the front it's well made and looks stylish.

One word of warning though, some stations broadcast at a low bitrate and hence the music sounds a little flat. Classic FM broadcast at a high bitrate so it isn't a problem. Check what your husband will listen to before he decides DAB is for him.

    Hope that helps.

Yet another option is to listen to DVB radio via a freeview box or, I think, via Sky. You can hook many of these boxes up to your stereo.

The range of stations is slightly less than DAB, the most notable missing stations being BBC local radio.

thanks for all your replies - my hubby is a very fussy git and wants only the best, hence no budget, but, i have passed all your tips on..............

he likes a cd player/hifi in every room and is gradually going to change them to dab - he likes to upgrade when new stuff comes out - as he is fanatical about his music............that is lucky for the relatives as he always gives the cast offs to them.............

thanks anyway - i think he has settled on one from currys at £199.........we have the tv digital already and also the computer card one, but, it is never enough for him, poor me..
