system restore problem

A couple of days ago I downloaded and used the free sample version of Uniblue Registry Booster. Since then each time I use Outlook Express a log-in box appears, which never used to. 'Okay', I think, 'not good with 'puta's, but will use system restore'. Anyway I tried to restore to the point before the download, and when the computer started up again, there was a message saying that it could not be restored to that point, and no changes had been made. Since then I have tried three other restore points, and still get the same message. Anyone any idea what's going on?

I take it you've tried uninstalling Uniblue Registry Mechanic

I've had restore points go corrupt on me before

could try combofix to see if you have and underlying infection thats turned it off

    post the log afterwards

Thanks for the reply Browntoa. Yes - I used add/remove programmes to get rid of Registry Booster, and I've since scanned for viruses with AVG, and found nothing. Sorry, but the combofix looked a bit scary to me, as I say I'm not very good with the whole 'puta thing!

The login box could be a server problem at your ISP or email provider.
Could also be that your encrpyted logon passwords were removed from the registry, but these can be replaced in your outlook account settings.

It's always best to do a restore in safemode. Also close anything to do with Nortons.

Did Uniblue do a backup of the registry prior to doing whatever it did. If so you may be able to use the backup it made to restore your comp. You may have to download Uniblue again to do this. Good luck

    Thanks folks.
I have been in touch with Uniblue who also told me to reinstall registry booster and use the restore facility, which I did, but system restore still does not work, and now add/remove programmes won't remove registry booster!
The log-in problem seemed to sort itself out, but I'm worried about system restore. Uniblue suggested booting up from the xp cd, and repairing the files, but xp came pre-installed so I don't have a cd. I'm not sure I would feel confident doing that even if I did.

Did you do as I suggested?

If it still doesn't work in safemode run a sfc. As you don't have an xp cd you have to change the registry as it will still look for the system folder i386 in the cd rom:

Now you will need to tell your computer you now have the files on your PC. We do this is the registry (type regedit in the Run box on the start menu) by navigating to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
    CurrentVersion\Setup
You will see various entries here on the right hand side. The one we want is called:
    SourcePath
It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive, and that is why it will ask for the XP CD. All we need to do is change it to:
    C:\
Simply double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up allowing you to make the change.
Now restart your computer and type into Run sfc /scannow (note space).

You can back up your registry 1st by using a failsafe prog called Erunt http://www.snapfiles.com/get/erunt.html

Sorry for the delay - couldn't access t'internet for a while!
Thanks again everyone. I did as you suggested Laz123, but nothing appears to have happened. I think I'm going to have to get someone in.
The log-in problem reappeared, and my default e-mail addy disappeared off the face of the earth, but I've managed to sort that one. My broadband speed is down to a measly 1mbps, and I'm in touch with Tiscali on that. Uniblue gave up on the problem, and kindly offered me a refund, even though I explained that it was the free trial I had used!!
All in all I'm beginning to think I may go back to the old paper and quill!
