Coronation Street - Irresponsible?

The mrs is watching Coronation Street from last night and they have a young couple who have just got a 15K loan for a deposit to buy a flat, do it up and sell it on for profit.
The script went something like this:
BOY: Excellent - we have been approved for the loan
MUM: Why are you getting yourself into debt
BOY: We need a loan for the deposit, we will never save up for it
MUM: It's because of people living beyond their means that caused the credit crunch.
BOY: So what, we want the flat.
MUM: Why are you rushing into this.
BOY: It's business, we are going to do it up and sell it for a huge profit.
MUM: Can't you wait?
BOY: No we need to buy while prices are low because they will start to rise soon.
I can't believe this crap is scripted into a mainstream soap.

Mybe the scriptwriters will write that they make a huge loss and price-rises won't happen. And it all ends in tears.
Wouldnt take it too seriously, its a soap, not real life0 -

I know but millions of people watch this rubbish - and will believe it !0 -
ER, its only pretend.
Theyr "actors".
its not a true story.“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”0 -
My DD was absolutely amazed yesterday when I told her that "blood" we saw on the tv was really tomato sauce, then made me put tomato sauce on my eggy bread to she could see how it looked as it it was "shot". She thought it was real before that.
I remember my gran was the same about Corrie.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
The Archers often does surprisingly well at reflecting the economics of rural business/enterprise: I don't see why other soaps shouldn't do the same.
Soaps seem a good way to educate the reticent, usually about social issues (Eastenders springs to mind for the much talked about in the media coverage of aids, and domestic violence). It would perhaps be beneficial to encourage people to think more about finances in otherways too. will writing and so on.0 -
The crapness is that the scriptwriters would actually have characters think like this now, and not three years ago. It's lazy, obvious scriptwriting: my goodness, do you think they will come a cropper?...:rolleyes:0

Like it. See what you did there;)0 -
While soaps like Coronation Street etc., are 'for entertainment only' and the story lines should not be taken too seriously, they also perform a function of 'normalising' things. People are subconsciously brainwashed into believing what they see to be true or acceptable.
Not many years ago, homosexuality was a taboo subject. Then, the soaps and other TV dramas rammed it down our throats 24 hours a day. This gradually made it acceptable or normal and now we accept that every soap has a gay couple - pretty much like most towns and villages.
I think the Government may have had a hand in the Street's scriptwriting. Desperate to get the housing market moving again (and the stamp duty rolling in), what better than showing people making a profit from developing. Property !!!!!! is back.
GGThere are 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those that don't.0 -
Well, we don't know what will happen in the end yet do we.
Maybe they'll lose the lot, not be able to sell, etc etc
On the subject of "real", I had an old great-aunt who used to get dressed up to watch the news. She'd then sit in front of the telly and when the man said "hello", she'd greet him back.... she really thought he could see her (60s/70s).0
