I paid off my Virgin card, I called today to cancel. They asked why, I just said that I was going to have my loan topped up because I need more money. They offered a new balance transfer with 0% for 6 months with the fee capped at £50. I said my limit wasn't enough, so they said they would put in a request to have it raised and I should call back in an hour ... I did so, et voila ... It got raised and I put in the balance transfer. Swish.
I have a couple of questions steve!

    1. Which number did you ring - and were you transferred to another department.

    2. Did your original T&C's state a £50 BT fee, or was this a 'one-off' special.

The reason I'm asking is that I'll shortly be trying for my second repeat deal.

    Yullo ...

    1. 08003282705 ... I didn't choose an option, I just held. I just asked to cancel and this person agreed to 6 months at 0% without transferring me. She then put in the request for a higher limit (I later found you can do this online, that might save you some time - why not try now?).

    2. My T&Cs stated £50. I got to keep the minimum payment of £5 too.

Thanks, but I prefer to 'chat 'em up' to secure a better limit - and get a feel for how far I can push without undergoing a credit search.

Well, just at the minute, I still owe them the thick end of £15K - but I'll have cleared it soon. ;)

You won't actually speak to the people that make the decision. The woman I spoke to just asked me some questions and told me to call back in an hour. When I looked at the website it had the exact same questions in the same order and said to wait an hour for a decision. They're just frontline people filling in a form.

That's not been my experience of Virgin (MBNA) Steve!

When I secured my first repeat earlier this year (on the 0800 7831116 number), I spoke with a decision maker and managed to get a 30% limit increase there and then. I could have had £1.5K without a search but decided to gamble on a search* and it paid off.

    * They only searched Equifax - not Experian as they did when I took out the card last year.

just ask for an instant decision as long as its within the credit dept opening times then they will do this for you Steve. Norm - 8-5.

Ah right, cool. It got an extra 1k with ease though. I guess I could have squeezed more pennies from them by speaking to the actual decision makers.

Same thing happened to me - rang to close my 0% interest credit card and they offered me a further six months - but was charged £35 to transfer but I reckoned I would get that back in interest - which is now 6.00 % with ing direct until August 2006 (but you had to be a customer as at May 2006.

    Hello all,

Just called the 0800 number. I managed to get a balance transfer capped at £75 with an interest rate of 0.9%.... which on the sum I transfered works out to be an interest rate of 1.29%. The deal is only for 6 months though. Now, I don't think that is the best deal in the world ever, but my mortgage is at 5.7% offset. So at least we can save some dosh for 6 months!!!!

    better than nothing though!
