Damaged and missing parcels

Hi
HAs anyone noticed a rapid increase in the number of missing or damaged parcels recently? I have not changed the way I pack, but the number of damages or not arriving in the last couple of months is getting silly. I am starting to dread getting emails and they always go on at me or expect me to wave a magic wand when their item isn't with them within 3 days over abank holiday weekend.
I am seriously thinking of giving up ebay with the con artists and moaners out there, not to mention the total lack of sales. At present I have 4 claims in with the post office another damaged complaint this evening and a possible missing this morning.
Rant over . Thanks for listening!

Well lets say the Royal mail lads / temps enjoy playing footy sometimes with the parcels ! Also i saw an article other week where they loose over 42 000 parcels a year ! Oh fantastic ! Gives you a lot of confidence dont it !

  • A few years ago when I was about 16/17 our local sorting office wanted temps for busy periods. While working there it seemed common practice for the staff to play basketball with the parcels trying to get them into the correct sack (each had a different postcode associated with it). There is no way that parcels were always in the correct sack, I guess that's why items get lost/go missing. Items marked FRAGILE were still thrown and you could clearly hear that some of parcel contents were obviously broken. It was quite shocking really.

That explains why a lot of my DVDs arrive dented or damaged. I used really hate when stuff arrived dented, even if it was only slight but now I accept it and its common practice.

I have had a lot of stuff go missing recently too, I've put in more claims over the last 2 month than ever before. As long as I get compensation I don't really care, its when I won't that will worry me!
  • What really really riles me about alll this , is what are the "so called floor managers " at Royal Mail doing ???? do they not see any of this abuse of parcels in their general day to day walkabouts ? Either that or they must be blind ! If it was me id kick these guys !!!!!! from one end of the sorting office to the other then show them the door .
I tried to get on at the post office last year in Kirkcaldy , i got to the interview stage and was sent a pack of bumph through the post and because i hadnt a full birth certificate and passport i couldnt get through the interview ! I had everything that said i was born n bred in the uk but no sorry on ya way lad ! You wouldnt find a more concientious / hard working person than myself so no doubt some half brain drugged up cretin got the job !. Yes our Royal Mail does annoy me , our post used to come at 9ish but now turns up at 12 midday i mean what use is that ? And when he comes ( i collect star trek memorabillia ) its as if the posty is like doing a favour to deliver the stuff ! Hang on m8 you are paid 250-350 quid a week ! Argh dont start me off ! What the PO really want is some serious face to face competetion as lets face it we think posting a letter is Royal Mail thats it .
Right ive had me gripe about the PO no doubt he will turn up again at 12.30 lean on me wall with 3/4 parcels and think hes hard done by again .......

For me the losses and/or damaged parcels seems to go in batches, almost as though (and this is just a guess) that a manager or something goes on holiday and a particular sorting office gets lax.

I used to use jiffy bags a lot but having had a few get tampered with the Post office themselves advised me to use tamper proof plastic bags which have cut down on my 'damaged' parcels an awful lot.

I also have problems with incoming post, in january I had a lot of parcels opened before they arrived, just a corner or an end openeded so that the contents could be seen. I complained to the Post office and was told that after Christmas they still had casual staff working for them. Last year there was also an interesting article in the Which magazine about tampering and even a test package the Which office sent was forced open so that the contents could be looked over.

I use tamper proof plastic mailing bags, but I still have an awful lot go missing at the moment.

We also have a lot of problems with post arriving - I even had a compensation cheque for missing post go missing!!

I have complained, but nothing changes.

The thing that gets me most is the criticism that I get for packing. My most recent complaint was about a damaged parcel to Canada - bubble wrapped and plastic mailing bag. It got damaged and they complained that I should have boxed it, but would they be prepared to pay for the box or the weight- no.

For this particular item I don't even include an allowance for packing as their is no margin.
  • with regards to damaged items - who would you say was responsible

    the post office
or a seller who packaged them very badly?

I ask, as a seller, i regard the arrival at its destination as my responsibilty and any buyer who doesnt get them as my fault, but ive just had a seller tell me, its not their problem if it gets damaged in the post - and that their very poor packaging was in fact adequate (which it really really wasnt - it would have got ripped in secs, it was that poor)
See the stars they’re shining bright
    Everything’s alright tonight
