been lurking a while, cant find any old codgers like me with debt free wannabe needs, so I'll go it alone. Since enforced retirement due to OH serious illhealth/disability (myotonic dystrophy) and my own health issues our income has plummeted, and our need for equipment, alterations, and things to enable me to continue to look after OH at home have escalated leaving me with serious CC debts which I am determined to defeat. sometimes tho, when he needs something I just cant refuse so have to get money from somewhere. still, reading the diaries of other wannabes inspires me to try. SOA will be done next and then I tackle social services again re help from them. fortunately no mortgage or rent to pay so home is safe just sleepless nights cos cant seem to focus on debt solving, when trying to care for OH and not giving him things to worry him

Hello mrsinvisible,
Welcome,
Make out your SOA (link - http://www.makesenseofcards.com/soacalc.html ) Try not to guess at the figures, dig out the paperwork! However remember a partial completed one is better than none. It is in fact one of the most important things you will do to start on the road to recovery. If you want a lot of help on this forum, posting your SOA is the first and most important step. After it is done it is very easy to keep it up to date.
For additional advise and help why not look here http://www.cccs.co.uk/ and here www.nationaldebtline.co.uk/ They both offer help for FREE.
Looking forward to your next postThere will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.0 -

Hi. It might be worth speaking to someone like Age Concern or the CAB to see if someone can do a benefit check for you. Basically that means they see what you may be entitled to (and help with the forms!)Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)0

Hi mrsinvisible
I was just wondering whether you had been able to access your local occupational health service to get an assessment, you may get equipment free/loaned/funded by them and may be able to get assistance towards the costs of alterations etc. Also are you registered as a carer?? you may be eligible for an allowance that you can use to contribute to the costs that you are incurring.
i am sure you have been through it all, but thought I would mention it just in case

yes we had assessment about benefits we get incapacity benefit and DH ges DLA but because of his tiny occupational pension we are just over the threshold for Income support. Because I also claim IB I cannot claim anything for care allowance (overlapping benefits rule)
Occupational therapy and social services have provided hoists and a profiling bed and also recently got an electric wheelchair as the one we had bought earlier was condemned, so to be fair we are getting some help.
Problem wit disabled facilities grant was that a) the occupational therapist said that DH could sleep inconservatory and it didnt matter about crers proximity, and b) using their means test formula we'd have to pay first 9K+ of any alteration. Challenged this and now they say they will approve alterations and we only have to pay 3K .....
maybe I'm not meamt to be debt free cos I'll have to borrow it somewhere
as this is needed to continue his care at home . Oh he doesnt meet the criteria for continuing care payments either!!
sorry this is a long post but need you to know that we are getting some help ad I'm not a 'poor me' er just worn out from fighting the system like lots of others.
thank you for your help and kind words and encouragement, it means a lot to me0
