Hardware ID Missing - Speedtouch Modem

I have installed a Speedtouch Modem on to my laptop. The installation was fine and when the modem is connected to the phone line i get the two solid green lights. However when I hover over the small icons on the bottom right of the screen, I get the message "no modem plugged in" and then a bubble comes up that says the following

Hardware ID missing. Windows cannot identify the device plugged into the speedtouch 330 adsl modem. For assistance contact the hardware manufacturer.

I know the modem is ok as it is in use now on my main pc
I have a HP laptop running Windows Vista

I have not contacted the manafacturers yet, as I always seem to get better advise from you guys

Anyone have similar problems or know how to resolve this issue

Hi anno, could it be as simple as downloading the drivers?

    I did find this comment.....
I had exactly the same problem. The solution I found was this:

Plug in the modem FIRST, then run the software installation downloaded from Thomson. (i.e. the instructions from Thomson are wrong).

    Good luck

    Did you install drivers properly?

Speedtouch comes with a big red label and instructions stating you must install drivers before plugging in the modem. If you do not then you will get error as described.
