Two Year Manufacturers Warranty Who Is Responsible?

I own a Mountfield Petrol Lawnmower HP474 (you can find it on the B&Q website) It was purchased at B&Q in May 2008 and has now developed an engine problem. It has a two year manufactures warranty and upon returning it to B&Q they tell me they are not responsible for repair and we need to contact Mountfield who will direct us to our nearest service point.
I might be wrong in thinking this but I thought under the “Sales of Good Act” it was the responsibility of the retailer whilst the item was still under warranty to repair, replace or refund a faulty item, I did attempt to point this out but was informed that Mountfield insist they are returned to them. If this the case I am not impressed since the nearest service point is miles away and we only managed to return the mower to B&Q with the help of a friend yesterday.
Any advice would be much appreciated on this...

Manufacturers warranties and SoGA are two different animals.
If you want to invoke the warranty you need the manufacturer and all the T&Cs that involves which could mean you paying carriage, although I see no reason why you cannot get B&Q to send it back to them under SoGA.
You can go via B&Q re SoGA as "not of durable quality" or "fit for purposes", (SoGA relates to the retailer, NOT the manufacturer).
See SALE OF GOODS ACT 1979 Section 48b; -
"(2) If the buyer requires the seller to repair or replace the goods, the seller must— (a) repair or, as the case may be, replace the goods within a reasonable time but without causing significant inconvenience to the buyer;
(b) bear any necessary costs incurred in doing so (including in particular the cost of any labour, materials or postage)."
See the links on the WHICH page.

B&Q should, if you ask them, book the repair for you. But they've told you to contact their repair agents, in this case the manufacturer. Technically they can do this - but it's not really good customer service.Squirrel!If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

Thanks everyone for the advice... I've spoke to B&Q again and explained the situation and they have agreed to take it from us and arrange a repair or a replacement and contact us next week. Success!
