can I put a fridge in a cupboard

I am moving into a new house and there is no room in the kitchem for a fridgefreezer. There is room for a fridge. I have a cupboard at the top of the stairs - I want to know if its safe to put a fridge freezer (or just a freezer) in the cupboard.

thanx in advance.

We had to put our fridge in an under the stairs cupboard but kept overheating, cutting out and then freezing over.

Its best to keep the door open at all times and make sure there is room either size of the back for ventilation.

Can you insert some vents into the cupboard?

A standard grille at both top and bottom of the door should do it

You will need plenty of ventilation to cool the condenser on the back of the refrigerator. I would think you would need something like a three inch gap at bottom and top of cupboard or you will have the problems experienced by "I want to save".

The fridge has to dump the heat into the air at the back via the cooling system. Some built in kitchens are pretty cramped, so I think you could make this work. I'm thinking some PC cooling fans and some B&Q ducting etc. Or some serious hole cutting to allow free air flow.

You could put a fan unit in there, I'm thinking an old heater with the heating elements removed. I had a heater which had a "no heat fan only" setting probably threw that out long time ago.

I had a freezer in our understairs cupboard for four years along will my AV gear. The only thing that ever overheated was the Sky Box! There was a three foot void behind it tho'.

Someone's offered me a small freezer free of charge (they're moving), the sort that go under worktops. I'd also like to put it in a cupboard. The one I have in mind would have plenty of space at the top - how much room should I allow behind it?

nearly all fridges have a little vent shelf on the top at the back so you push them all the way to the wall and still have a 'built in' vent gap.
