Myself and my wife have a joint gross income of 52k and a 4 year old son who we have been sending to private nursery for the last 3 years which we have had no assistance with. My son is due to start school in Sept 2009 meaning we save on the nursery fee's however, our 2nd child is due in January 2010 meaning my wife goes on maternity leave thereby reducing our household income. I have a mortgage, council tax and bills to pay but will have to do so on a reduced income. I am not aware of any benefits I am entitled to. Can anybody help me. I have spoken to Citizen advice bureau who were not aware of anything. It feel that working families seem to get victimised for having children? Please help.

You can claim for CTC and when your wife goes on to SMP you can disregard £100 of the MP for TC purposes. As TC award is based on last years salary, you can contact them to let them know your income has decreased, though you must not underestimate your income otherwise you will get an overpayment and lose your £25,000 disregard.

As you income is high you will not qualify for anything else.

  • Not in a huff, just think you lot are idiots as I asked a genuine question and you lot think I am too big for my boots or something. I don't make any apologies for actually having a job. I asked a proper question but what I got was a bunch a idiots replying. If you look at the site home page, it clearly ask's "Is your household income under £66350, if so you may be entiltled to extra income". As far as I am concerned, if you do not have anything positive to say, please do not reply to this post. And before any of you do, don't bother to slate me. It is childish and I expected better. If you can help, then please do.

I did not think you were a troll but there do seem to be some posters looking for trouble when it is not there at the moment.

I was wondering what the other posters were talking about as this is a common enquiry I deal with often.

The OP has a point in that their income has been potentially halved from high income/high expenditure causing them a lot of problems the same as it does for some one on low income/low expenditure and want to know if there is a safety net. Losing a salary whilst on a mortgage can make you homeless, if you are in social housing it won’t in general. Unfortunately there are no umbrella payments as there is in football!

As alwaysonthego has mentioned the only benefits you are likely to be entitled to is Child Benefit and an extra £20ish/wk Child Tax Credit for a year when your expectant child is born. I think your wife will also be entitled to free dentist etc for the year if that helps.

Don’t feel that you have been treated harshly, what you have is a family you love, support and enjoy and are the backbone that will strive to pull the country forward. I thank you and wish you every happiness with your family.
