£ help for mature students

Options
Hi,

I'm 28 years old and have been offered a place to study at Derby on the Occupational Therapy degree course. The NHS pays my student fees and gives me a bursary fo £2400 a year which discounts me from getting a student loan. I also receive a medical pension from the RAF of £2300 a year as I was medically discharged. Please can anyone advise if I can get any benefits or grants to help with my living costs. I am not a lazy person and do intend to get a saturday job but due to health problems I need to make sure I do not get stressed from toomuch of a work load. I have no dependants and rent privately. Any advice would be fantastic. Thanks x

If you live on your own and it a fulltime course (which I assume it is), then you do not have to pay council tax.

You should easily be able to live off £4,700 a year though.

Run your details through the student finance site, depending on your circumstances and maritial status you may get further maintenance assistance. Also depending on your housing circumstances you may be eligible for housing benefit through your local council plus get a certificate from your uni for the council tax reduction.

    Hope that helps

Hi Helen, Derby also give students a bursary which i believe is around £1000 and is given according to your residing postcode, have a look at the uni website it has the details there. On a side note you'll enjoy Derby I'm the other side of 40 and just about to start my third year, all the best with your future studies.
  • If you get the income-assessed NHS bursary, you should also qualify for the non-income assessed student loan from SFE. Apply online at www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance.

Are you sure you can't get a student loan? I thought it was only the maintenance grant you were not entitled to if you got an NHS bursary?
