lifespan of a combi boiler?

Could someone please advise? Mine is 12 years old and the fan has gone. The plumber said there are some small cracks in it also so it might be better to replace it. It has seen very little use as usually only one person in the house, but the house has been rented out for the last few years - hence I don't want to spend out the cash if it will keep going for a few more years!

It is well worth getting more than one plumber to have a look, if possible get some personal recommendations.
I was told by 2 plumbers that I needed a new combi (in a previous house) the 3rd plumber fixed the fan for £150.00 and said the rest looked in good working order, it was 8 years old and a Gloworm. The first 2 plumbers didn't even identify the fault correctly. It then worked fine for another 2 or 3 years until I moved house.0 -
Thanks, but the problem is I have to rely on the letting agent and her team. They have only quoted £1400 for a new boiler, which I'm assuming is for supplying only - will check but wanted to do a bit of research first! It's almost £300 for supplying and fitting a new fan.0

You say the plumber said 'might be better to replace...' if you want a repair push for that, though I suppose a 12 year old boiler won't last for ever?
Perhaps you can still get some quotes yourself - even if over the phone - to check and satisfy yourself that the prices you are being quoted are reasonable?0 -
1400 is a lot for suppling a boiler , that qoute sounds more like supply and fit. the boiler will cost around 5000

yes, exactly that: which is why I wondered if anyone knew the lifespan of a combi boiler - google gave a lifespan between 5 and 20 years which is rather wide!0

Sorry, but why are you obliged to get the boiler changed via your letting agent (at an apparently exorbitant price too)? They might take care of running maintenance if that is the contract you have, but not a major renovation like a new boiler surely?
A combi could last 6 years, it could last 20. I would be disappointed if mine didn't do 10 though. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Most boilers are considered quite old after about 9yrs, especially as technology moves on so fast nowadays. That's not to say a boiler is on the scrap heap after 9yrs & it should be repairable if a reputable make. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0
