Wrong price displayed - order been cancelled

I hope I'm posting this in the right place...I'm still new to this forum.
Earlier today I went onto the WHSmith website to purchase something that cost 163.99. At checkout, the price was actually 51.19 so I made my purchase, gave them my card details etc and received order confirmation. Soon after they changed the price online again, noting their error and have now cancelled my order.
Can they cancel my order because of this? I was going to complain but I'm not sure if they have any right to do this since they must have displayed the wrong price....does anyone know whether I'd be right to complain?????

From what I gather, you saw the product on the website at £163.99 and it became £51.19 when you went to pay? So they advertised it at the correct price, it was just a website error.
They should really have contacted you to explain rather than simply cancel your order, but there's not really grounds to complain.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
Thank you for your reply. Actually they displayed it at 51.19 too. Thats where I have my doubts. The home page had the advert saying 'only 163.99' click for more information so I clicked and there was the product information and above the product 'original price 200 and odd (can't remember), current price 51.13 saving of...and the difference' that was before I clicked to buy.... If I don't have any rights, I wont make a big deal about it but if they may be in the wrong I'll give it a go.0

This is a common and frustrating problem with internet sites, if you are in a shop you pay your money and walk away, but annoying though it is online retailers can 'fix' the error and request the extra money or offer a full refund even if they have sent you confirmation. Has happened to me a couple of times and in my experience it's pointless complaining.0

Thank you for your reply. I think it's just wishful thinking on my part. I was buying the product on behalf of a friend and can't afford it myself but bought two when I saw the price as I could afford the 51.19..I so so want this item and was crossing my fingers the order went through..oh well, best start saving the pennies...0

It's only after you receive the goods that the contract is complete. Any email confirmations etc they send you don't really have any relevance for that.
What they absolutely can't do is take the wrong, amount and then try to charge you more or ask for the goods back after you've got them.0 -
Thanks Mark. I think I'll just send an email saying I'm disappointed, doesn't seem fair etc and leave it at that...and do some saving in the meantime. Unless someone knows where I can get a Sony e-reader for less than 163.99....0

I now have an email saying it was cancelled because of reasons outside of their control. So they haven't gave me any explanation.0

hmmmmm....yes, I think I could really:rotfl:Still, I wanted them to spell it out to me so I could use it as an excuse to argue my case a bit. I know they aren't going to give in but maybes its worth at least one unhappy reply from me0
