Hi,
My computer kept rebooting itself before loading windows, so it was suggested I take out the hard drive and put it in another computer as a slave to retrieve the info thats on it (important A ;level coursework!). This was done and it accepted as a slave but not all the files are showing and it says that one particular file with lots of info in it is security protected. My friend has tried all ways to try and get to the filw without success so does anyone clever out there know of a way round this. I never put any passwords on any of the work to stop anyone else seeing it and was told that this is just a machine security set up.
Sorry if I have jumbled a bit but does anyone understand what I mean and can they help as I am only a novice and my friend is the brains who will try and do it for me.
Thank you so much

What kind of file is this?
What happens when you try and open it?0 -
The file is a document folder under my name and it says that access denied.
We thought originally that the hard drive had gone on the old comp as it kept rebooting itself but my friend said that the old comp is reading the drive and memory on start up and he is at a loss of whats wrong with it. We also tried starting it with windows xp disk in drive at start up and that didnt work either still keeps rebooting before strat up completed.any ideas????
I did notice that when put in as a slave quite a few files never came up as all my sons have seperate folders on the dektop that didnt show up and other folders also dont appear. Does this mean that half the drive is working??
Thanks for any help.0 -
Hello
Take Ownership of this folder as described below.
HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308421
HOW TO: Set, View, Change, or Remove File and Folder Permissions in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308418
Note: If you cannot see the Security tab, then you will have to goto Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View and untick Simple File Sharing, apply and now you should get that tab in XP PRO !!
For XP Home edition, you will have to boot into safemode and have to login as Administrator to access the Security tab, coz in xp home this tab cannot be visible to standard users !!
