it's massive and well worth visiting. It's on the upper floor of Cite Europe and Tesco is downstairs. All the Tesco staff seem to speak English but not so many of the Carrefour staff - strange that ...

I drove to a big hypermarket in Boulongne last time we went and got some good deals

The one in CiteEurop is pretty big. It's the one where the supervisors tend to whizz round on roller skates, in order to cover the ground more efficiently. On the other side of the motorway there is also a retail park with a huge Auchan, which I personally prefer, as well as a booze warehouse, big diy outlet etc. Also a Buffalo grill, which does a nice line in bison burgers for lunch. Google is your friend for any of these places.
One thing worth remembering is that the hypermarkets which cater mostly to the locals have very little beer in cans, its virtually all stubbies. They may well taste a wee bit better, perhaps, but very inconvenient for bringing a load back. The two mentioned above have cans. In fact, I'm just in the process of sinking a can of Saint-Omer from Carrefour. Very cheap, and not at all bad, 5% lager. Comes in cases of 24 half litre cans....

You need to do a little investigating before you go, but Tesco, Sainsburys, Majestic and Oddbins all have special offers that can't be beaten in the UK.

    Some of the deals from our last trip a few weeks ago were;

    Tesco
    Argento Malbec E2.65 £2.30 ish
Big Kahuna (Red & White) E1.67 £1.50 ish
    Banrock Station 3L box E7.49 £6.50 ish
Calloway Crossing (Shiraz) E1.80 £1.56 ish
    Yaldara Chardonnay E2.75 £2.40 ish

    Sainsburys
Castillero Del Diablo (Cab Sauv) E3.11 £2.70 ish
Palo Alto (Cab Sauv / White Sauv) E2.26 £1.96 ish
Sutter Home (Merlot) E2.26 £1.96 ish
    and 2 absolute crackers
First Landing (50cl bottle Aussi Red) E0.67 £0.58 ish
Pata Negra Reserva (v. nice) E1.35 £1.18 ish

So even with an exchange rate of around 1.15 Euro to the £, there are still some great deals out there if you are prepared to shop around.

Planning on going to calais with a few of my mates in a couple of weeks. Does anyone know the address of the really large hypermarket over there. I think it is a Carrefour but my mates went a few weeks ago and said they went to Carrefour but it wasn't very big and a search on Google Maps brings up several Carrefours in Calais.

Is the one at CitiEurope the really big hypermarket?

yes its the only big 1 i know of in calais, theres an auchan as well

heres the cite europe site and heres the details for the auchan site, theres also wine beer world calais and sainsburys wine store calais, i know at the tesco you cna collect your tesco points but im not sure about nectar points at sainsburys

Yeah I'm planning on going to Sainsburys as well as I have found from searching on the internet that my Staff discount should also work in the Calais store.

Will most likely pay a visit to Cite Europe. Thanks for the help everyone.

Citie Europe is not for the faint hearted- it can be hellishly busy. If you're a wine drinker, look out for the J.P Chenet- around £2 a bottle compared to some being double that in the UK.

If they only made the school day an hour or two longer I'd be doing our weekly shop on the other side...
