Car Tax Exemption

Options
Hi,
I have just been awarded high rate mobility. I received a tax disc exemption form which I have sent off. How does this work? Do the DWP send it to DVLA or do I when they send it back to me?

Also the car is registered in my name but im no longer driving (hopefully temporary). However i have not yet told DVLA although I will do when i get an idea of how long i wont be able to drive. Still waiting on prognosis etc. My question is dothe DVLA assume that as you getting high rate mobility and in my case high rate care that you not capable of driving and revoke your liscence anyway?

Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

If you have a recognised condition you MUST tell the DVLA. These conditions are on their website. As for the car tax, you have to send off the log book and get the car re-classified as "disabled" Then you send off the forms, insurance and MOT and exemption cert. I actually took mine to the nearest DVLA office, as I didn't want them to lose my insurance and MOT cert.
They then issue you with a years' tax disc, and if your old one is still valid, send it back for a refund.
The following year you can apply online.

Your tax exemption certificate is processed at the DLA office which you will only receive if in receipt of high rate mobility. DVLA have nothing to do with the issuing of the certificates. If you are unable to drive yourself you can nominate a registered keeper, however, your regd keeper is only allowed to drive a vehicle with tax exemption for YOUR benefit. In other words, if your regd keeper was to use the vehicle for their own means and was to have an accident, they would have to prove they were doing something for you in order for the insurance to be valid.
If you do still have a tax disc you have paid for, there are instructions on the back of it on how to claim your refund. DVLA will only refund full months, so if you are half way through the month when you claim you would lose that full month.
Also, make a note of the date your tax exemption certificate expires, you need to send it off to renew it before it either gets full or expires to make sure you can tax your car again in time.
P.S. Once you get your tax disc, contact your local council to see if you qualify for a blue disabled parking badge, each local authority differs on the rules on this.
  • You will automatically qualify for a blue badge if you have been awarded HRM. Just contact your local council for a form.

HRMC is a passport to a blue badge under goverment rules and local councils must provide a blue badge on request, they cannot refuse anyone with an HRMC award a blue badge.
