We have a DECT cordless phone (Binatone Activity 6210) which has been OK up to now but has recently started losing connection in mid-call (and sometimes the second handset won't pick up a call at all), so we think it's time we replaced it.

We want:
  • Twin handsets
  • Decent battery life (currently only get about 10-15 mins on speakerphone or 20-25 mins of normal use before getting low battery warning - though I think it used to be better, so I've just replaced the AAA batteries to see if that helps) - not so worried about standby time but need a decent talk time.
  • Speakerphone facility on handset
  • Answering machine
  • Low power consumption ("greener" phone) would be nice to have
... and of course a bargain price would be nice too!

I've been looking at various online reviews, using Argos as my starting point, but the choice is completely overwhelming . Having said that, I am quite tempted by some of the Panasonic ones - possibly the KX-TG7341EM (such a catchy name!).

Any comments/recommendations? Thanks!

What you describe (particularly the short talk time) could well indicate that the batteries are past their useful life (my experience is that rechargeables typically last about 2 years if they're nearly always left on trickle charge). If you've replaced the batteries with good quality rechareables, you may find the problems go away.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • I think that changing the batteries may well have helped in terms of how long we can use the phone, but it has been cutting us off even before the batteries have started to run low so I'm not sure if it'll solve that problem. Still, we'll give it a week or two and see if it helps.
