Everyone uses a modem to connect to the internet. Some like virgin will be separate, others will be integrated into the (modem-)router with BT lines.

True, but if you recall when DSL was first introduced as a viable means of connecting to the Internet many service providers would fob their customers off with something like this. Though this was fine for those who had but one PC running Windows, for anything else they were virtually useless.

Saw this but it does not have an Operating System On It (only has XP oem sticker on side)
