help buying wireless router

Our old router is playing up and I need to get an other one, it is a Thomson speedtouch but since I bought it our computers have increased to
desktop wired to router, XP
desktop wireless, XP
2 laptops wireless, XP, Vista
Xbox live

I am not sure it is able to cope, But I need a router that can, it will need to connect to a telephone line (ADSL?) it is a 3 bedroomed semi detached house but some of the walls are stone and quite thick.
It needs to be easy to set up, I have to young teenagers putting pressure on me!
From my point of view it needs to be value for money.
Thanks for any help.

I would suggest you want an N rather than a G spec modem / router.

I recently changed from a Thomson speed touch and bought a Tenda WD300D which was adifficult to set up and unreliable. I got a Netgear DGN2000 which was easy to set up and works very well (so far!) > http://www.johnlewis.com/230586979/Product.aspx

Suggest you try a D-Link D2740....good performance and major benefit is that DMT v8.xx http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://dmt.mhilfe.de/ works with it to tweak your connection speeds :D. Or a current favourite in techie circles is the Netgear D835GT, with DGTeam firmware..also tweakable :)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • The DGN2000 is what I've got. I bought it from Amazon for £55 last year and although I haven't had any real problems with it, there are mixed reviews on the Amazon website.

Strangely enough, the price of it shot up everywhere soon after.
It's £12 cheaper on Amazon than JL at the moment. You may well get it cheaper elsewhere.

If every pc apart from one is working, a new router would be a waste of money, it will be a configuration problem.

If you search you will find cheaper than @ Amazon, e.g. http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/Reviews.asp?ProductID=7255. I did see the mixed reviews @ Amazon and elsewhere and after wasting money on the Tenda which I bought online, I wanted to buy from JL as I was confident I could take it back if I was unhappy.

I tend to agree with you on this although I came across an issue recently with a mate's setup where one particular laptop would not get an IP address from an "Orange" router for the wifi connection. Wired was fine, but no wifi at all. It wasn't a great issue, but when my mate changed ISP and got a new router, everything was fine again - go figure

if you can use the pc's Mac Address number as security along with the WPA option, this will be better than WEP option by far
