Licence Fee - Is it worth it?

Options
Poll Started: 18 April 2006. The licence fee costs £131.50 a year (for any home with a colour TV) and pays for the BBC that's TV, radio, regional programmes and BBC online. Is it worth it? Which of these is nearest your view

A. Yes. The BBC produces consistent quality output
B. Yes. Mainly due to BBC radio though
C. Yes. Public service broadcasting as a concept is important
D. Yes. It's a good buffer against government and tabloid power
E. Yes. A different reason
F. No. Its too costly, halve the price and its budget and I'd be happy
G. No. The BBC does nothing for me, I'd stop using it to save £131.50
H. No. I pay for Sky already, its ridiculous
I. No. Only BBC online is good, and I'd happily see it have ads
J. No. It's another tax, why should the BBC be so special
K. No. Another reason

    Hi Dan

    Good Poll. I have voted

    F. No. Its too costly, halve the price and its budget and I'd be happy

because I hardly watch tv or listen to the radio. IMO only occasionally do the BBC put something on that I would watch anyway. But I wouldnt want to get rid of it completely., so willing to pay reduced rate.

I just dont feel the public have a say in what they pay for re: the tv. I would really consider only having th other channels if the fee was scrapped.

But how do I opt out of having to pay for all the advertising that funds ITV?
I may not want to watch the "standing news" on ITN, but advertising adds to the cost(s) of most products.

I tried to vote 'Yes' but really needed a 'yes for all the positive reasons listed' option. I think that the licence fee is excellent value for money. Anyway, the vote link keeps timing out so I can't vote yet.

I voted yes, mainly due to the radio. I do tend to watch quite a bit of tv, though mostly in the background whilst MSEing, but we usually have radio two on in at least one room of the house and in the car. I like the variety on that channel and there are often some very good programmes and news articles.

As much as I am critical of a lot of tv programs, I have to admit that BBC are far superior in terms of quality than commercial tv is. I also think the quality of reception is better, less compression on digital tv than many of the commercial revials.

They strengths are local news, comedy, drama and documentaries

Of late Planet Earth the best documentary ever. The street, drama, brilliant written and acted so far, very gritty drama. Brilliant.

EDIT almost forgot I hate adverts on during a movies although I apprepiate that the programs have to be paid for. I just dont like it and hardly watch a film on commercial tv for that reason.

yes for the radio and david attenbourough no for eastenders :)
  • Hi,
Just recieved my £200.06 from Barclays fairly easy but it took a bit of effort. I do resent having to pay over a good bit of that to the BBC just to watch telly. It may provide good quality programmes but it does advertise between those programmes! Channel four produces some very high quality public service progs from its advertising revenue, why can't the BBC fund itself in the same way. :money: :money:

To keep some channels ad free it is worth it. If we had no channels funded like this then the other channels would increase the amount of ads as the competition for good tv would be weakened.
