Hi,
I put this in the insurance thread a while ago and got no replies so I'm thinking i might be best here as this bit deals with credit reports and you guys seem to know all the ins and outs in a big way!!

My sister wants to add her fella to her car insurance policy. He is a bit of a lazy no good hates authority, big brother is always watching you, shoot all the coppers type so its taken us a while to convince him this is a good idea. Its only cos basically he moves the cars off the drive depending on who arrive home last or nips to the shops quickly, and he's only covered 3rd party using his own insurance policy so she's agreed it makes sense. Just easier than knowing who can drive what car. Looking at comparisson sites it will also bring her policy price down as he is older and has been driving longer.

If she puts him on the policy as a named driver will this link either of their credit reports such as linked address or joint finances? They have no other joint assests. Because he's got awful credit and she's always been keen to protect hers and keep everything strictly seperate. She be gutted if she got linked to him, and he'd flip if he just thought anyone was somehow keeping tabs on him. Despite it being HIM with bad credit he's assume he was worse off somehow by big brother having him listed on her credit file as a "partner". He's a strange bloke and I'm not hugely keen on him!!

So any ideas? Will having a partner as an additional driver link those people or addresses somehow ?? Cheers people, i know you'll come up with the goods! :-)

She as the policy holder is fully accountable for the credit given to her as far as the car insurance premium goes (assuming she pays by monthly installment) thus he, as the secondary driver, will not be linked in any way on any credit file.

As far as him being on her car insurance policy affecting whether the two are linked by address - I don't know. Sorry!

Oh her credit is fine, thats ok, she'll pay every month no problem. But are you saying on the off chance she DID forget to pay one month that WOULD link them??? Oooo i dont know if she's want to risk that!

Just to point out aswell that she will nor be "fronting". She will be named as the main driver.

Cannot see any reasons as to why being a named driver on a policy would 'link' them financially as it is possible to add almost anyone to a car policy as a named driver be it family or friends.
When I owned a minibus a few years back I had several named drivers for commercial use.
One point that does surprise me is the statement that having him as a named driver will bring down the price of the premium as the policy holders details are paramount in terms of NCB earned.
As far as I am aware policies paid by installments do not report to CRA's so wouldn't worry about the financial links aspect.
An identity check MAY be carried oout on the main proposer.
    Hope this helps :D

But did it go on those peoples credit records that they were on your insurance? I cant see that it would affect them in any way if it did. Dont know why it bothers him so much.

I've got 9 years no claims now but when i was younger with only a couple of years NCD i always put my Mum down as an additional driver and that brought my policies price down. I live away now and she wouldn't drive my "monster" car anyway so i dont bother now.

Cheers, big help, my sis wont mind them checking HER but he'd just flip if it was down anywhere that they'd checked him too.

    .
Definitely not linked by being named on policy.
Just spoken to the AA as my insurance is due for renewal next month and asked the question.

Only way a financial link is created is via joint bank accounts or loan applications, NOT pay monthly car policies.
As mentioned an ID/Fraud check may be carried out, 'soft search' but nothing else :D
Payment history not generally reported either on these accounts which is a pity :D

Hi Kat, it seems I may not have worded my response very well! What I meant was that because she is the main driver, she is the only one who has credit for the car insurance, and whether she pays or not, it will not link them in any circumstance at all.

Hope that clears it up a bit!

As above, and also confirmed by Aviva manager last night. No link will be created and to be fair, no credit data should be shared either it is only the 'address search' i.e. a footprint, that should be there - no credit data whatsoever.

There is no chance any missed payments will be recorded, in fact you'll find you don't actually sign a credit agreement in the usual sense in that they are giving you fixed sum insurance credit i.e. if you fail to pay they simply null & void the policy - they wouldn't give two hoots about reporting to the CRA's.
