Removing tar spots from paintwork

I have just washed my car and there are lots of small tar spots on the bonnet. I have some Autoglym tar remover which used to work, but it now doesn't seem to.
Have I left it too long to get it off? Or do I need to leave it on there longer? (i'm scared of leaving/rubbing it too long in case it damages the paintwork) Or! Could it be that it's just too old? (i've had it about 2-3 years max).
I want to wax my car but would rather try and get these off first...although it'll probably rain again before I get a chance

I haven't got any and to honest, would never use it again if I bought some.
Thanks for the suggestion though! Any others? I have WD40 which I did think about but not sure that's a good idea. I also have T-cut, but again, worried that might damage the paintwork. Trust it to be on the bonnet, anywhere else and I wouldn't really be bothered by it.Grocery challenge - Nov: £52/£100

I use a computer media tape cleaner. Basically alcohol, and not harsh like white spirits.
It removes tar/tree sap quite easily and doesn't damage the finish.
1/10th of the cost too of this so called "professional products"
to do the job properly though get some detailing clay - but make sure it's well lubricated.0 -

Petrol on a rag will do.
Tardis is brilliant! Though make sure you wear gloves... My hands are immune to the stuff now!0 -
My mothers tomato soup, white spirit, WD40, or Petrol (Don't smoke!) failing that try an angle grinder.
(ONLY JOKING - oops too late!)0 -
Haha, thanks for the suggestions
I'll bear them in mind for the future.
I went back out with the tar remover and gave it another go. 45 minutes later using cotton wool pads to apply and buff and one long strong thumb nail I am done! I'm sure my neighbours must have been thinking 'she's bonkers' as I was studying every square inch of the bonnet. I think i'll leave the waxing until tomorrow now as it's a 3 step thing and it's starting to get dark.Grocery challenge - Nov: £52/£100
