I read something similar several years back. I think reusables broke even with the cost of disposables with one child but were far cheaper with subsequent children. I suppose that must be for the top of the range reusables. I used disposables as they are more convenient and the reusables I did use leaked.

I havent read the posts but I used mainly reusables (my nursery accepted them once I explained what to do) but do think that disposables have their place! My son is now dry through the day but not at night and I find that own brand pull ups work best for us now. Used reusables right up until potty training tho and would deff use again! I recommend then to all my pregnant friends lol

    Thanks Rachel and elf.

Elf - you have just reminded me that I need to ask the childminder if when jnr comes she will mind using washables. I have heard some say they can't use them due to some regulation in ofsted? TBH I think she will be fine but should check as may have some bearing on how much I am willing to pay!

my DS is in nursery and they can (but some may choose not to) and he also goes to childminder one day a week. She has him tomorrow and if I remember I will ask if they are allowed to.

I have heard great things about junior joy - are yours the terry ones? I am in two minds about shaped or flat - flat are so much cheaper and look like they can be folded to fit perfectly whereas I hear/read mixed views on the shaped.

Oh, and i love cashback - the buggy I realistically dream of is a jane shalom with the matrix cup car seat (goes completely flat so absolutley safe to use for long car journeys and in place of a carry cot). It's pricey but an off roader and with cash back could be even more enticing! Although apparently mothercare give 10% discounts, price match and are known for good replacement policy. Not sure they do the combined set I am after though.

BTW - I managed to pick up two packs of degradable liners today for 50p each! Yohoo! I do love a bargain :T

I have the junior joy flat terry squares, I would say get some of both at first and test it out. You can always sell what you don't get on with on the used nappy sites. People swear by the shaped ones but I found they still had to be folded in some way and took forever to dry.

I need to start shopping for a double buggy (2nd due in feb), there don't seem to be so many bargains about on those!

With cashback sites remember to check them out for child trust funds, I got £50 when I opened mine and you can move it once it's opened (and you have the cash!).

No idea about childminders and nappies but even if they won't use them just using them at home will save you money and cut down on nappies sent to landfill.

I've found the likelihood of leaking pretty much the same between disposable and reusable, if it is one of those poos that is going to leak it will whatever!

Thanks ktpie - I would say its worth looking at mothercare online, they have some buggies on offer plus you can get a 10% discount for signing up to their plan and I saw an online voucher (possibly myvouchers) that gave 10% off so maybe they can be used together? Mothercare may even be on a cashback site? When I compared the buggy I want on kiddicare to mothercare it was cheaper with the 10% than the caashback. Also I am pretty impressed by the after sales service should anything go wrong.

(10% off is if you commit to that purchase by 31st August - but you don't have to pay now and I think there isn't any interest added)

    Hi there,

I'm very surprised you were told that reusables could cost the same when washing nappies

My washing machine on a quick eco wash setting (30 degrees) costs me just under 4p to run with approx 2.5p of powder.

If this were full of nappies, it would wash a full weeks supply (I wash other stuff with them so I can put a load on sooner)

even the cheapest disposables cost around £5 per week, so I think whoever said that just didn't do their maths! :o

Or I'm doing something very wrong!:D

All the best with the baby and pregnancy, and good luck with whichever route you decide to go down.;)

Ok so forgot to ask yesterday but she called today about her plans for next week and I remembered to ask on the phone. There is no reason why a childminder cant use them but it is up to the individual whether or not they will. My nursery took a little persuading but only cos they didnt understand and as DS childminder said as long as the parent is providing everything there shouldnt be an issue.

Thanks, I will ask - she keeps chickens and has four allotments so i am hoping that she will be pleased with the environmental side of it!
