Theatre School?

Options
We have 1 daughter already at uni which is great. Our 2nd daughter is set on a career in musical theatre and hopes to go to one of the theatre schools in London in September 2007. We have lots of the prospectuses (sp?) and have an idea of what to expect at audition etc. But apart from me and her dad selling our bodies to science - how on earth do people fund it? Not only are the fees huge, but there's also the living costs etc etc. I have a vague knowledge of the dance and drama awards which would be great but apart from that - nowt.
Any advice would be appreciated - don't anyone say "Dont put your daughter on the stage Mrs Worthington" - that's not an option!

Don't have a solution I'm afraid - hopefully someone smarter will wander past soon.

I too attended a theatre school - technical side in my case though - and worked the entire time I was there. Bars, restaurants, west end theatres - made props, made patchwork quilts. Not easy when you are also staging shows in the evenings.

Biggest tip I have for you - make sure she learns how to cook. I lived on £6 per week for food in London and survived pretty well (although I did kidnap my Mums slow cooker) Meant that I ate well but didn't have to resort to expensive takeaways. Kind of went into the whole thing expecting to be as skint as a student as I would be as a "professional" in theatre :rotfl:

Funny thing is, I never earned more than 10k a year in my theatre career. But the skills I learned now earn my up to 6K a day (a few days a year) on the lecture circuit.

If your daughter is committed to a life in the business, time for her to step up and be committed to life as a skint student too. Suggest you point her to the OS Board for some creative tips of how to make what little you stretch so much further.

Hope between now and September she not only passes an audition but that you all figure out how to help her get her dream. After all think how proud you will be watching her receive her Oscar (some of my classmates have ACTUALLY been nominated, how cool)

Let us all know how she gets on

Thanks Memorygirl. She is used to seeing me lurk on here most days so I'm hoping to pass the lurking (and posting) gene on!
The way I see it is that she's perfectly capable talentwise of doing well and so why not give her every opportunity to fulfil her ambitions? Even if things don't work out (we're under no illusions!) her years studying could be some of the most rewarding and interesting in her life. Some of her friends are working actors already - I work in a shop (and am grateful for it), but it's not quite the same is it?!
Besides, I am determined to be one of those mums who basks in her childs glory - watch out for me stumbling out of a cab in Heat magazine!

    Go Girl!!!

My Mom always threatens to do the rolling out of a cab in Soho tabloid shot - mind you we now live in deepest darkest Scotland so that could be a issue.

Good luck to you all - with a sensible head and a large enough will - nothing that can't be organised by 2007.
