Long story short. I have not used my bank account since 2007 then had my baby December 2007 and then spent most of 2008 with her in hospital having 3 heart ops. Well I finally decided to check my account in our local branch(which I thought had been closed) a few days ago to find that I have recurring bank charges of over £400. I was given a number to call from my local branch and then got passed to a collection agency who wanted full payment. I am not working at the mo tho currently looking so cannot afford these charges. I cannot work out how my charges are so high considering I have not used the account for almost 2 years so want to dispute the charges. What is the best way of going about this? I do not use internet banking so cannot contact Nationwide through the internet but need to get this sorted as soon as possible as the collections agency have said that soon my debt will be sold onto another debt company! I want my account active as I am job hunting and would most likely need wages paid into the account. Any advice would be great

Can you go back a peg or two? How did the first charge occur?0 -
It is so long ago I cannot even remember what the 1st charge was for lol . Am hoping that the bank will provide statements so that I can look back through them and try and work out when the 1st charge occured and what it was for.0

I have just received a letter forwarded from my previous address from a debt collection ageny on behalf of nationwide. I phoned Nationwide who said that I went £6 overdrawn in 2008 and I now owe £233 to a debt collection agency for overdraft charges and I will have to make an arrangemnt with the debt colectors. Is there anything I can do?0

Yes, tell the debt collectors that you dispute the amount of the debt that is owed and you have sent a letter asking for more details from Nationwide. Under the OFT debt collection guidelines they cannot chase or harrass you for a disputed debt.I have just received a letter forwarded from my previous address from a debt collection ageny on behalf of nationwide. You need to request statements from Nationwide to verify how much you owe against the charges that have been taken from your account.0 -
thank you for replying, if all of the debt is due to bank charges do I have to pay it all? I can't believe that they can justify £227 charge for a £6 overdraft0
