The wording will be the same as we all use the computerised systems now, so all that gets done is little tick boxes. The VOSa computer fills the rest in.

900 miles in a year could make a whole host of things wear out thru lack of use as it will just rot!

Your car has failed, deal with it.

    Harveybobblydoobie!

That is a tad harsh me duck. OP had new shocks 900 miles ago - seems unlikely that they have gone again... That is if they were replaced 900 miles ago... But it was the same garage group that failed it the previous time and replaced the shocks and have failed it this time on the same thing.. Highly unlikely I would've thought.

Its not that time of the month, is it Harveydobblebits? ;)

    They are shock absorbers.

Sorry, maybe my post didn't quite say what I meant. I didn't know what that part was (thanks for the info :D) but maybe the OP did, maybe not.

I was thinking more along the lines that if the OP is being ripped off, the garage might have just put anything down that is difficult for the average joe to identify. If the OP does have any suspicion he's been ripped off, getting the MOT centre to point out exactly what they think needs replacing might call their bluff and could give the OP the info he needs to work out if they were replaced before and whether the really need doing now. If he takes in to another garage for a second opinion, he could then point out exactly what the first garage had said needed doing.

Unfortunately sometimes the wording that VOSA allow you to use when doing an MOT comes out like a lot of gobbledeguk!

Problem is, the OP had the shocks replaced 900 miles ago by a garage in the same chain that has failed the car again for the same fault!

Seems odd - which is why it would be a good idea for the OP to go somewhere independent for a second opinion.

  • Thanks for your replies. I think if the garage had said the faults (on both side of the car) were due to the car not being used much and the parts perishing I would be ok with that but they didn't. They said it was because the car went over too many bumps which isn't true.

Also in over 20 years of owning cars I haven't come across this fault before and I've owned some real bangers, except from this garage 2 years previously with this car.

My dad also owns a spare golf which he stores most of the time. This car hasn't suffered the same fault despite not being used, nor has he come across this once in his 50 years of owning cars, let alone twice. Guess he's just been lucky.

So you can see why I'm suspicious. Can't afford to pay it atm so I guess it's no car for the summer hols.

Does anyone know if this is a fault I could look at myself or is special equipment needed?

    Thanks

A helluva lot of bumps you must've been going over!

Ideally you need to get it onto a ramp. Do you have a nice garage that you know near you? If so, get them to put it on a ramp and show you if there is any play or not in the shocks (or in VOSA terms, excessive movement!). If there is, I would question whether the shocks fitted 900 miles ago - were really fitted, if so, were they of poor quality?? Not that you can do much about them now, as most parts have a 12 month warranty or ex amount of miles.

It may be worth giving VW a call and see how much two shock absorbers are from them. I doubt that they are expensive...

From the description it sounds like it’s worn top mounts not shocks. G&S do them for about £10 each, fitting would be maybe an hour ish each side max 3 hours for both so price sounds about right. Shocks would be £30 each with the same fitting times.

Guy I work with has had various gti’s and now a vr6 and I don’t remember him having a problem with top mounts and I can’t see that they should wear out in 2 years/1000 miles from new.

It might be worth getting a second opinion/MOT from somewhere else but that’s a £50 gamble

DIY is possible but you need to take the spring off so needs a spring compressor, I’d guess if you have to ask then don’t do it as there is a lot of energy in a spring and it can easily knock your head off if you get it wrong
