If youve got an Abbey/Santander Credit Card...

Options
get rid.

Just got my statement and they've charged me a late payment charge of £12. They got my payment 8 days before it was due!!

Phoned and was told that there was a note on my account saying that the charge was because the payment hadn't been processed until after the 20th! And when I asked if the late fee would have been refunded if I hadn't called, she said 'NO, it needs to be done manually'.

Outrageous! Will be closing the account once it's paid off next month.

  • I had the same problem yesterday, they must have a lot of extra £12's this month, mine arrived in time but because I paid by cheque they said I should have got it in 10 days earlier for the cheque to clear!

ridiculous - and how many will think, oh, they got it late, so wont' query it? And a late payment charge ends up on your credit rating.

    I paid online, BTW.

Without wishing to defend Abbey's dire customer service (how does this bank manage to stay in business?), may I ask why you pay your credit card bill by cheque. Nowadays, there are faster ways to pay ;)

    Oh dear...!

    But just for the record:

    1) I've found their customer service fine, despite their reputation here. Always got through to "English" people.

    2) I paid online through Nationwide last week (21st) and it is showing as having been received on the 22nd. (Due date 28th).

Seems to me they are waiting to know that a cheque payment has cleared before deeming to have received payment. This seems unfair to me - they receive the payment "for value" before the time they know that it hasn't bounced.

Abbey are dire and a real pain to deal with. Their customer service is certainly shabbey and I've had enough.

Cancelled my abbey credit card and bank accounts today and good riddance. Several far more superior banks are out there and a some of those conduct themselves with integrity and recognise their customers.

I was going on holiday for 2 weeks and I was paying by cheque thinking I was more organized as I had all the bills just sitting waiting to post, also I got paid a couple of days after I went away so I didnt want any money to debit out of my account straight away incase it left me less euros, wont be doing that again!
