D-Link Router / Steam App Rules?

Hey all,

I've finally given in to a problem I have when using my D-link router and steam.

Steam is a application that supports online games. I stumble across problems when I enable the SPI on the router. I want SPI enabled as its good part of my security. Basically I can't refresh the server list and my favourite servers flag up as not-responding with SPI.

I've been to Steam Q&A's etc and found the list of ports that it uses. I'm still not 100% on what ports the 'server list' uses if different from the main steam ports. I've disabled SPI and monitored Kerio for opening ports, as soon as I click on refresh servers I get like 500 outgoing servers in my Kerio 'connections'. Please see pic

These servers are obviously all different, and they seem to range between 27000 and 29000 UDP with the odd few 1337 and other stupid ports to be awkward.

Now, for the annoying bit, I have tried everything in my power to create rules for these ports but I've had 0% success on the server refreshing with SPI enabled.

In my D-link config page I have:-

Virtual Server
Application
Filter
Firewall
DDNS
DMZ

Anyone got any ideas?

thx!

  • on the application page, you should be able to enter the port ranges that would be triggered by your Steam-disabled game ;)

SPI should be able to run with this setup - but don't worry too much because NAT functionality in the router does a very reasonable job effectively discarding packets.

Forgive my stuipidity today, i'm full ov cold and my heads mashed!

    Can you explain steam-disabled game?

    Application Page

    Name: Steam1
    Trigger Port: **** - ****
    Triger Type: TCP/UDP/Both
    Public Ports: **********
    Public Type: **********

What would you enter for these options?

Thx for the reply Lob Rockster :)
  • Steam-disabled is purely my cynical viewpoint on the "features" introduced with UT3 etc which use the Stream Engine <snigger> to play multiplayer games (and I believe to activate the game?).

The ports you enter in your Application page would have the trigger ports and type IMO to be UDP. This would render the router to present these ports as open to the internet once the PC application triggers them to active.

    Bah! No luck.....

I get 1 server coming up........I'll just have to keep turning SPI off to do a server scan. :(
  • Hmmmm at university they block all counter strike ports so we can't play it online, YET we can see the server lsits without anmy problems at all!

That would suggest to me that the server list uses a well known port rather than a registered one!!!

Have you tried comparing netstat when steam's opened/closed and seeing the difference?

This is what I get when refreshing the server list

Proto Local Address Foreign Address State
    TCP xp_one:1043 quakenet2.blueyonder.net:6667 ESTABLISHED
    TCP xp_one:2033 207.173.177.170:27039 CLOSE_WAIT

So I close down Steam....and get this:-
Proto Local Address Foreign Address State
    TCP xp_one:1043 quakenet2.blueyonder.net:6667 ESTABLISHED

So I open steam and it shows this (not clicking refresh)

Proto Local Address Foreign Address State
    TCP xp_one:1043 quakenet2.blueyonder.net:6667 ESTABLISHED
    TCP xp_one:2123 69.90.232.34:27038 TIME_WAIT
    TCP xp_one:2124 69.90.232.34:27038 TIME_WAIT
    TCP xp_one:2125 69.90.232.34:27038 TIME_WAIT

I click server refresh and get:-

Proto Local Address Foreign Address State
    TCP xp_one:1043 quakenet2.blueyonder.net:6667 ESTABLISHED

But if i view the ports through Kerio it shows 500+ all ranging from 27000 to 29000.

I don't quite understand how the server refresh works.....annoying!
