Scam Warning - UPI ltd.

Just recieved a cold call from a firm called UPI ltd. They're claiming to be working on behalf of the ministry of justice, and are offering to claim back up to £1000 + 8% interest because of a new change in the law.
They asked for my house number, postcode and card details (including the 3 digits on the back). They will then charge you £50 to send you, what I have been informed, are the bank reclaiming forms available on this website.
After doing a bit of research, it appears that some people have been rung up with UPI holding full details on them, including bank account information, mother's maiden names and ex-directory phone numbers. This could very well be a serious breach of data protection.
Being the troll I am, I fed them false details; but if you ever recieve a call from them:
- If you're on telephone preference, ask where they have recieved your information from and why they are calling you.
- Don't give out or confirm any details, especially card or bank account details.
- Ask for the name and contact details for their Data Controller.
- If they have your details already, ask where they have recieved those details from (be persistent if they fob off with answers like 'selected third parties').
If a Data Protection Expert can clarify the specifics around this that would be great.

They're claiming to be working on behalf of the ministry of justice
That is always a good indication of a dodgy claims company. Over the years all the bad ones have given the impression they represent some Govt linked establishment or similar.
It's a bit like me saying I am working on behalf of the FSA. Or a solicitor saying they represent the law society etc.

Not uncommon with many claims companies. Many of their sales reps have got hold of client data over the years and have used that data.
