How much for bolier service

Hi,

We haven't had our central heating/boiler serviced since we moved in 4 years ago. Have got a plumber coming this afternoon to give me a quote for a service. How much should I expect this to be?

And is it just the boiler that generally gets services? Or do they service the whole lot? Whats the norm?

Thanks

I was told by a gas servicing friend that a standard rule of thumb was about £70 per appliance. That certainly measured up when my boiler and fire were serviced @ £130 but I'm sure there's cheaper - he was only with me for an hour max.

    Yeah, thanks, I saw that.

We're also going to need to get our Mid Position Actuator Valve replaced and I was a bit worried that parts from British Gas would be more expensive and that a local engineer is likely to be cheaper. Anyone any experience of BG servicing/parts cost?

A friend of mine who is a boiler engineer charges £60 for call-out and first hour of work plus the cost of materials.

Make sure the person you are using is what was CORGI registered (now GASSAFE I think) - if he is just a plumber without registration then he is not legally supposed to work on gas equipment (and therefore might be cheaper but probably a corner-cutter.)

My friend above, can only work on boilers and cannot touch gas fires, so strict are the regulations now.

Many thanks. The engineer is Gas Safe registered and I got him off CheckaTrade which appears to be quite good.

We charge £50 + vat for a boiler service, and to supply and fit a mid position valve would be £150 + vat.

I booked with npower but cancelled after two cancelled appointments - the second 20 minutes after the 2 hour slot in which they were supposed to come round- I was then told that they were fully booked for 4 weeks in my area. Not impressed by their customer service so will ring round some local companies.
