DVD recorder help needed

Options
Apologies if this type of question has already been posted.

I recently purchased a very cheap DVD recorder, it's an Avious 1029, bought from a Superdrug warehouse sale for £30.00. Managed to get it set up ok to start with and copied recordings from Sky+ with success. Problem was with the picture, I had to go through the various settings to find the channel to record from, in the end it was the scart option. Hope this makes sense! the picture could be best described as wavy, could be watched okay but annoying, so I set off last week to improve the picture. Again in the settings I found what I think was the screen size 16:9, 4:3 or at least that's what I think it was. Anyway changed the setting and hey the picture was perfect, sound came up to normal too. Only problem now is that I cannot see what's playing! recorded some more from Sky+ and managed to watch through another dvd player, when I go to set up on remote, 'set up' appears on the player display but nothing on screen. Any ideas as to how I can see the on screen menu and what is being played?

Any help is very much appreciated.
