I grew up in Adelaide. It is flat, dry and quiet - many compare it to a large country town. If you like wine then definitely hire a car and check out the Barossa valley and MacLaren vale - most of the Aussie wines at the supermarket are from here. If you like a long drive you can go out to Henschke's which in my view makes some of Australia's best wines - Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone.
The food in Adelaide is excellent. You can get a great meal in a cafe on rundle street in the city or if you want something a bit more up market try the pheasant farm in the barrosa valley (check that it is still open).
Kangaroo Island is worth a visit, but if you want Kangaroos it would be easier to go to Cleland reserve in the Adelaide Hills. Try going to the beach while you are there. You can take the tram which runs from the city down to Glenelg. If you want to go farther afield you could go to Victor Harbour which is quite a popular place.
If you are prepared to go inland there is coober pedy and Flinders ranges.
The key to enjoying Adelaide is to eat, drink and take it easy.0 -
