Redundancy help

Hey
A friend of mine has just been made aware he is ‘at risk’ of being made redundant. The department he works in within the company is apparently not efficient as they had a merger several months ago and now have several people doing the same job. There is 8 staff and they have said there are 4 roles available. The job title of HR assistant remains the same in these new roles although the job description has changed ever so slightly. They had a meeting in which they were told the 8 staff would have to go through a selection process including interviews to get the 4 roles thus 4 being made redundant.
But on a letter they have received it states if they wish not to go through the selection process and apply for the new role which is technically the old role with a few adjustments made to the job description, they will be forfeiting their right to any redundancy pay and it will be classed as them resigning from the company.
Just wondering is this allowed, he's nearly 60 and there is no union at his workplace so just trying to help him out with any advice.
Thanks

the company i worked for did this. I didnt take any of the jobs because it is a national company and the branches that the jobs were advertised at were too far to commute.
The branch i worked at was closed and they were merging branches. my manager who was "service manager" at the branch i worked at. Applied and accpeted "area supervisor" job which was a similar role. He sought advice and he was told that if he tried the job for 3 months and decided the job wasnt for him he would resign and then take the redundancy.
He did the 3 months, he didnt like the job and was offered a job with another company and he claimed his redundancy.
hope this helpsMarch 2006 £15,200+ in debt April £843.64 in debt - Debt Free date Sept 2009

3 months would be special and by agreement with the company, most will just give you the statutory 4 weeks trial and if you are still working after that and tehn decide then to leave you would get nothing.0 -

Yes they can, unless you could show that the new job is not suitable, perhaps one of the new terms is not acceptable or it is in a different location
Best to apply and fail the selection if they don't want to stay.
Is the package any good? and does it have any link tothe pension provisions.
What are the current retirement policies they may actualy only need 3 people and are prepared to wait the few months if it is 60, allthough that may not be enforceable now the age discrimination rules say 65.0
