How long between offer and acceptance?

Well, hopefully today's the day we put in our offer! This is in Scotland so the figure's been agreed verbally and in theory the vendor should accept no problems.

Does anyone have any idea how long it will be before I find out? Someone told me the vendor would set a closing date, someone else told me the same but that it would be a date stipulated by my solicitor (ie the offer would be withdrawn by a certain date) and someone else told me it'll hopefully just be accepted right away.

I'm so impatient - do you think I might hear today?

You may find out quite quickly if your offer has been accepted/rejected. However, your first offer is not neccessarily accepted and the house will more than likely go to a closing date depending on how much interest there is. It only needs two or three noted interests to go to a closing date. If there is a closing date, your initial offer will be withdrawn and you will be invited to submit another offer by the set date. Of course there's no guarantee that your offer will be high enough as it's blind bidding. Up here in Aberdeen, properties are easily going for 40 to 50% over the 'offers over' price.
