Santander

Just received my statement from my credit card with Santander with a notice of default for a late payment for £12. I phoned to clarify as I was sure I had paid on time as I was going on holidays.
It turns out I had paid on 13 July and it wasnt due until 15 July but because I paid by cheque they classed it as a late payment until it cleared!
Beware of paying by cheque.

Yep unfortuantely I too have paid too late for cards before. Cheques normally require 7 working days to be sure to meet your account in time.

It will tell you this on the back of the statement I expect and it's one you will need to chalk up to experience.
  • Yeah just checked the back of statement, 7 days , looks like they have me!

Santander are really picky like that. I have a Topman store card and I always pay at least the minimum payment. This time I made a mistake and paid £1 under and they charged me £12.

yes-if you look at the statement of some cards they do stipulate that it could take 5 or so days for a cheque to go through.Hence, set up a DD for the minimum and then overpay wherever you wish without fears of incurring fees.
