Help! My PC has picked up a trojan!

Hello

Clicked on a website (I have a firefox add on called WOT that indicated a green light) and it brought up loads of different screens saying trojan.

Since then, we had a windows security alerty that our McAfee was out of date (this was not the case) and we run a Mcafee threat scan. It found 2 threats which we tried to clean and delete with no success. We then installed Spybot and this found them and allowed us to fix them. We then ran Mcafee again and it came up with another high risk trojan which had a different name to the original.

We then installed a-squared and did a deep cleanse. This brought up 2 high risk trojans which we deleted and deleted from quarantine. We ran mcafee again and it was clean.

We ran a-square again as a precaution and it has found 2 high risk trojan files

win32.suspectCrc!IK and virus.Win32.Trojan!IK

I am really worried that this is not good news and concerned I can't seem to get rid of it. Have used this forum before and had loads of help and hope I get the same again this time!

Hi Juliav,

I've found that in the past a-squared picks up a lot of false positives associated with other spyware/AV programs. It may be the case that the viruses deleted from the McAfee quarantine could have trace signatures still on your PC and that is what is being picked up by a-squared. Having googled them they don't seem to be particularly harmful nasties, just irritants.

I'm not a massive fan of McAfee either - there are better AV programs out there that you don't have to pay for as a home user.

To protect my PC, I use Avast, Malwarebytes and Spybot, and have been clean for over two years. They work well together and none of these are resource hogs. I recommend giving them a try. And of course making sure you firewall is turned on! ( If you do want to try them, uninstall your existing protection using Add/Remove Programs, then google the three words. Whilst they are being installed, don't access email or any other websites just to be on the safe side!)

I agree, I have used many Anti virus checkers and Avast seems the best at the moment, it catches the most viruses before they can affect your computer so you fix it straight away.

It will be worth it to start in safe mode and do a virus check there, the idea of safe mode being that everything except the basic microsoft files are removed from the windows directory. so no bad things are running.

1. download malwarebytes antispyware (free), install and update and run a quick scan, post log on here, remove anything it finds. download from https://www.malwarebytes.org or https://www.filehippo.com

2. hijackthis 2.0.2 also download and run scan with log file, post log here.

disable your antivirus whilst your running both of these. and reboot if necessary.
