mexico holiday insurance

Hi all,
I need to arrange insurance for the family for our upcoming trip. I've read all the advice and visited moneysupermarket to see what's available but I suppose I'd like a bit of advice from anyone that has had to claim since that is the only useful indication of value!
I've had quotes starting at less than £50 but the choice and variations of cover are mind blowing. i have trouble choosing from the menu at a restaurant if there are too many options...
The holiday is £5500 so I need cover that stretches to that. I paid on credit card despite the 2% for a little extra peace of mind. The cancellation cover on many policies is not clear whether it is per traveller or per family group. Some give the children free cover with the adults so does this mean the per person cover will only cover the adults?
I need to make sure cover includes hurricane I suppose?
Loads of questions but as a long term non-flyer this is a real special occasion as I have decided I can't deprive the kids any more.
All help and advice greatly appreciated. We go in 3 weeks and have no existing medical probs except my wife has an overactive thyroid.

You are risking it if you have paid out all that money, and not taken any insurance! Anyone in your party could have a problem preventing you going, and you won't get much back if you need to cancel at this late stage.
There is an article from MSE Martin on travel insurance here:

hi Quentin,
I only booked it yesterday so am trying to arrange the cover asap0 -
OK - but someone in the party could have got knocked down by a bus this morning! Cancellation cover only operates from the time the policy is taken out, not from the time you made the booking, so you need cover in place from the time the booking is made.0

Which is exactly why I am on here looking for advice on which policy to take. Can you help?0

That MSE article I posted the link to has lots of general advice as well as best buy recommendations etc.0
