I think they have a similar thing to here ..... where you pay for health insurance through tax .... but I would check this out ....

Should you need medical help while in NZ, you wont be turned away - however, you will need to pay for doctors visits, not sure how much that is nowdays - was about $60 eight years ago...Travel insurance can be high because of the extreme sports that people take part in while touring NZ. Where abouts in NZ are you basing yourself???
