Hiya guys I'm doing a summer art course to help with my degree and am studying Chris Ofili. As art history is all new to me I wonder if anyone knows where the title Afrodizzia comes from. It is his Turner prize winner.
I know an African music station has the same name but not whether the art is named after this or the station named after the Art? any help would be great!
Thanks all

Is this the guy with the elephant poo?
I have no idea, but you could write to him and askYou might get lucky and get a reply.
You could try googling for an interview with him or a critical interpretation of the work.
edited to say: Some journal references here: http://www.csa1.co.uk/discoveryguides/art/abstracts-fcat10.php?SID=j18jh0jl5v872mbkt3jj3dljv5:staradmin:starmod: beware of geeks bearing .gifs...:starmod::staradmin:starmod: Whoever said "nothing is impossible" obviously never tried to nail jelly to a tree :starmod:0 -
Find out whether the radio station started before or after he produced the work? That'd at least tell you which came first.
I think the word is actually is actually supposed to be a play on the words afro (as in the hairstyle which adorns the heads in the collage) and aphrodisiac as there is a popular conception that black men are better in bed. But I don't have any reference which explicitly states that.0 -

I must admit that's how I interpreted it when I first read it (no evidence, just from the semantics):staradmin:starmod: beware of geeks bearing .gifs...:starmod::staradmin:starmod: Whoever said "nothing is impossible" obviously never tried to nail jelly to a tree :starmod:0 -
