But isnt the penalty if you switch before the 1 year ? You said it "finishes shortly"
I am in the same boat as you as my capped rate ends soon and i have to start looking around for a good deal

Hi Beattie,
If you are currently on one of our fixed or capped rate offers the chances are that there will be a cancellation fee applicable should you transfer away before the expiry date of your offer.
Feel free to PM me your account details and I an check our systems and advise you what offer you are currently on and when this is due to end.

If you are on the Fixed Price Energy Online 2009 then you will be penalised if you switch before 31/8/09. Just delay your switch until that date or use the Energyhelpline comparison site as they will 'hold' your switch until your Fix expires so you do not incur the charges.
If you can wait to do it manually and the offer is still on, and the comparison sites show the current cheapest tarrif is an E.ON tarrif. Quidco are currently offering £80 cashback for a dualfuel switch to E.ON. If the level of cashback is nolonger available when you come to switch, you have lost nothing as you can go back through Energyhelpline again.
Remember to clear your cookies when going from a comparison site to a cashback site to ensure you get the cashback you think you should.0 -
Suppose you could just move on to the cheapest Scottish Power tariff and then look to switch in your own time? I'm in the same boat, but don't want to rush things and if I can get onto their cheapest tariff this buys me some time.0

seems a good idea to me0

As long as you don't go onto the most expensive tariff at least you'll be ok in the short term. Martin Lewis is on GMTV next Tuesday talking about this issue so might be worth recording or tuning in. I'll be watching as I'm off work that day so can report back?0

I've recently taken steps to transfer to EDF and asked them to arrange to move me from Scottish Power Fixed Online 2009 Tarrif, which ends on 31st August. EDF tell me this will take 6 to 8 weeks to complete. So I estimate I'll still be supplied by SP until mid August.
I phoned Scottish Power and was told they would apply the penalty charges as soon as they are notified by EDF, even though I'd continue to be a customer of SP until beyond the date the penalty clause is implemented.
SP's Ts and Cs require a notice period of 28 days to cancel the contract, therefore I believe SP have it wrong. As long as the transfer takes place after 31st Aug then no penalty charges should be applied.0
