I was wondering whether anyone can explain to me how you can record more than 4.7GB on a single layer DVD R- disc?
I know it can be done because I bought a couple of discs in Southall which contained more than one film on them and when i checked them on my pc it says the discs are more than 4.7GB, normally about 7gb.
Given that the discs were selling with the films on them for about £3 and some were got about a year ago, I know they aren't dual layer discs?
So how do they do it? I have a NEC 2510 and given how my 2 year old uses my disney discs as frisbees I owuld like to back them up but save on the discs by putting more than 1 on per disc. I can compress them as I use Clone dvd but this only allows one title per disc? Anmyone know how to put multiple titles on per disc without just lowering the compression, or hell just how to put two titles in on this disc via any means?
;D ;D ;D

Usually , the easiest / best way to do this is to copy the files to your hard disk and then take out the 'useless' stuff . Do you really want to have the Spanish soundtrack ? The director's comments etc . This can dramatically reduce the size of the file for burning thus enabling you to put more onto one disc .Growing OLD is Compulsory
Growing UP is OPTIONAL !!0 -
A single layer DVD is capable of storing a maximum of 4.7GB of info. If two films have been fitted onto one single layer DVD then one of the following must apply:
- they are both very short films.
- they have both had all extras stripped out AND been HEAVILY compressed - using software like DVD Shrink.
- they have been converted to a format such as DivX, Xvid, AVi, or Mpeg4 which should retain image quality not too far below DVD-Video
- they have been converted to SVCD or VCD - but the quality drop is noticeable when compared to DVD-Video.
What goes around - comes around.

How do you know they aren't dual layer? They sound like dual layered to me.0

I know they aren't dual layered discs because the costs of the films (both 3hours and in full very good quality) was £3, and a dual layer disc is more than this.
I got one of these two film discs last march and it aint original and the size according to my pc is 7.4 Gb.
So how have they done it- i noticed that they seem to put them on different titles accordinmg to my dvd player but is this how to get more than 4.7gb onto a 4.7gb disc? How is the pc tricked into believing it is 7gb?Mark Hughes' blue and white army0 -
Do you really believe that the people who are pirating these movies that you buy are paying the same prices for dual-layer media as you and me pay?? ::)
The media is probably knocked off, or the movies were pirated in the far east where costs are going to be significantly lower.
To squeeze a 'quart into a pint pot' as you want to do in backing up your kids' films, something has to give. Normally this is quality, which suffers as compression increases. Anyone who comes up with a lossless compression to allow two full-length movies onto a standard 4.6GB DVD will be on a winner.0 -
del... i have the nec nd 3500.. can you tell me what discs you buy?? i'm trying to work out what to get that will a- work and b - be cost effective! cheers

db247 I use SVP.co.uk as they are relatively cheap and once every few weeks do a shipping for 99p on orders over £30.
I am currently using datawrite grey 8 x DVD -R discs which costs about £6- £7 per spindle of 25. On top of that if you order blank boxces at the same time they cost approx 10 p each.
I tried the red DVD -R 4 X discs but found the quality to be slightly worse than the yellow 4 X discs- however in terms of time the grey ones are good and relative cheap.
Anyway- using dvd clone can anyone tell me how to put two different titles on the same back up disc? i can clone one or the titles but cant seem to do stuff from two discs onto one?Mark Hughes' blue and white army0 -

It's dual layer then.
The way you burn a dvd on your home pc is totally different to how a film studio makes their dvd's. You can't relate the Dual layer disc prices that you can buy with dual layer discs that movie studios use.
Putting 2 movies on one disc will involve lots of manual editing of dvd files. best bet is to look at doom9.org and dvdr-digest.com forums0 -
you need to read these links to save a dual layer to a single layer disc
